I’ll first start by saying that when in doubt just go for it! For me, I believe any opportunity is either a lesson or a learning experience.
I first came across targetjobs’ Undergraduate of the Year Awards through their regular email updates I get sent to my inbox. It was honestly by chance that I opened this message and just decided to put myself out there because honestly, why not?
A bit of background about me, I’ve had a bit of experience in insurance but nothing professionally, but ever since then I’ve always had an interest in the sector and was looking to explore more. So when I heard back that I was selected as one of the top 10 finalists within my category to possibly be the Future Insurance Professional of the Year Award, I was honestly stunned. I couldn’t believe it. As someone who experiences quite severe imposter syndrome, I thought it may have been a mistake or even been sent to the wrong person. But when I started receiving follow-up correspondence, then it began to sync in.
I was invited (alongside other finalists) to attend the office of one of the current leading insurers and also spent time at the fantastic ceremony hosted in Canary Wharf. It was great to see all the diverse categories, offering the chance for individuals from different backgrounds to be celebrated. Overall, I would say that this opportunity was unexpected but definitely welcomed. In a way it solidified myself being recognised for all the hard work I’ve been putting in over the years and it felt gratifying for this to be acknowledged externally.
I would definitely recommend anyone who’s thinking of applying to do so, as you never know what could happen - you might even win & take home an award !
