I was offered a 10-week summer internship within Central Manufacturing at Rolls Royce.

Through the Undergraduate of the Year Awards, I was offered a 10-week summer internship within Central Manufacturing at Rolls Royce. I was placed in the People Capability team. Working alongside a fellow intern, I was tasked with refreshing the Manufacturing Engineering Leaders framework, which had become out of date over the years. I talked to many contacts across the business to find what the best content was and where to locate it.

We collaborated to produce a professional proposal which led to being accepted and uploaded to Rolls Royce’s intranet. Additionally, I collected, collated and presented information with respect to the functions Operating Model and the inclusivity and accessibility of becoming a Manufacturing Engineering Manager. Initially, meeting and interviewing senior Managers and Chiefs was daunting, but during the summer, my self-confidence increased considerably; this is a skill which will serve me well and which I can continue to build on.

I was also initially intimidated being a Mathematician operating in an Engineering environment, but I embraced it and learnt about a whole new world. My favourite part of my placement was the people I met. From the lovely interns to the employees I interviewed, everyone was supportive and always willing to help. It was a great insight into the working world and what it is like to work for such a forward-thinking company.

In the future, I hope to return to build on my confidence and challenge my mathematical skill. This placement could not have been possible without the Undergraduate of the Year Awards. A huge thank you to targetjobs and Rolls Royce for this invaluable experience.
