When I first applied for a role at Rolls-Royce, I faced an early rejection, not because I was not suitable, but simply because I applied too late and the cohort was already full. At the time, it was a bit disheartening, but I did not let it stop me. I knew I had something valuable to offer, and believed my skills and behaviour aligned really well with what employees look for an apprentice. So instead of giving up, I kept searching, kept learning, and stayed determined. Eventually I came across UGOTY through targetjobs which I was so excited and grateful for.

The application process definitely made me reflect on my journey in a deeper way. At the start, we were asked to write quite a few long answers, which at first felt a bit intense, but looking back, I really appreciated it. It gave me the space to properly express who I am, what I have learned, and what motivates me. Applying through targetjobs also made the experience feel more structured and supportive, and it felt like I was being given a real chance to share more than just a CV, I got to tell my story.

When I got the call saying I was a finalist and that I was invited to their ceremony in London, I was genuinely so happy and proud. I remembered how confident I felt during the assessment centre, I knew I had given it my all, so hearing that it had paid off was such a rewarding moment. After being rejected earlier in the year, this really put my confidence higher and being able to believe in myself. It was a reminder to keep going, even when things do not work out the first time.

I enjoyed every bit of the ceremony, even though I was not the winner, I was grateful to be invited. The food was nice, and I got the chance to network with many people, which made the experience really rewarding.

Applying was a wonderful experience that opened many doors for me. Not only was I offered a degree apprenticeship at Rolls-Royce, which aligns perfectly with my career goals, but I also received some Rolls-Royce branded gifts. Beyond that, the full process helped me improve my communication skills, boosted my confidence, and allowed me to build valuable professional connections.

My advice is to never leave things to the last minute and never lose hope. Stay determined, and trust that with persistence, doors will open for you in ways you couldn’t have imagined. Believe in yourself and keep pushing — it’s worth it.
